Find data by area type or organisation

Statistics.gov.scot, offers a variety of ways to find data. This guide describes how to find an individual dataset by searching or browsing by area type or organisation.  Other guides are available for working with data in a dataset, once you’ve found one you’re interested in. See the Getting Started guide for an overview of using the site. 

Find data by area type

If you’re looking for areas which are not postcodes (like data zones) but you don’t know the code, browse by council area first. If you know the name of the council, this can be done using the Search box. If not:

  • Click on Atlas in the top toolbar
  • Scroll to Location at the bottom of the page
  • All area types are listed to the left of the interactive map. In this example, I’ve selected council area and an alphabetical list is shown to the right. If you don’t know the name of the area you want, hover over the sections on the interactive map.

Browse by organisation

In Atlas, scroll to Location and select the Organisations title to the left of the map.


Select the organisation you want to view data for. The above shows organisations for the whole of Scotland, which are too numerous to show in detail. At a closer level (such as Council Area), you can scroll to location and view where those Educational Establishments are.

Summary

Find Data by Area Type
  • Click on Atlas in the top toolbar
  • Scroll to Locations at the bottom of the page
  • All area types are listed to the left of the interactive map, alongside an alphabetically ordered list of related area type names. Alternatively, if you don’t know the name of the area you want, hover over the sections on the interactive map to the right.
  • Select the area you want to view and scroll to the Dataset section of that page for datasets containing data about that area type.
Find Data by Organisation
  • Click on Atlas in the top toolbar
  • Scroll to Location at the bottom of the page
  • Click on the ‘Organisations’ tab, which is to the left of the interactive map
  • Select organisation type
  • Click on the name of the organisation in the list, or find it on the map. You will then go to a page for that.
  • Scroll to the Dataset section where you can view a list of datasets containing data about that organisation.
